Universal Extractor is a powerful and well-known tool to extract files from hundreds of different archive types, installers or otherwise compressed files. It has been created and maintained by Jared Breland until he set it on hiatus after the release of version 1.6.1. Currently, there are several slightly updated modifications floating around, which consist mainly of helper binary updates. Additionally, some improved versions with auto-updaters, more supported file types and GUI redesigns exist. Sadly, these are scattered around the internet and no central and easy download packages are available. As a user you would have to search through many forums in a wide variety of languages to even find a link to the program.
UniExtract Installer (5.3 MB) - This is the recommended download. The installer will automatically install the application and optionally integrate with the Windows Explorer context menu. This package does not contain source code.
UniExtract Source Code (163.13 KB) - This archive only contains the source code, but it includes all support files as well (compiler scripts, installer, etc.). This is best to download (along with the binary archive) if you want to help further development of UniExtract.
Note: If you download Universal Extractor from one of the official links above, it is not infected with a virus. If your anti-virus software tells you otherwise, please see this forum post for details.
As of version 1.4, Universal Extractor supports internationalization. If you're interested in translating Universal Extractor into another language, please download the source archive and follow the instructions in English.ini. Please send me your completed translation and I'll include it in the next version of Universal Extractor. Thanks to all of the contributors! To use these language files, simply download and copy into the lang\\ directory of your Universal Extractor installation. The new language will appear as an option the next time you run UniExtract.
Select Additional Tasks - These options specify additional actions that can be performed by the installer. They only affects installation of Universal Extractor, and cannot be modified later.Enable Explorer context menu integration - allows you to right click on any archive and directly extract its filesAdd UniExtract Files... to context menu - adds ability to specify destination directoryAdd UniExtract Here to context menu - adds ability to quickly extract to current directoryAdd UniExtract to Subdir to context menu - adds ability to quickly extract to subdirectoryForce association with with all supported archive formats - Forces UniExtract to associate itself with all supported file extensions; by default, it will only associate itself with native Windows formats (.exe, .msi, etc.) and other formats not currently associated with another programAdd Universal Extractor to your system path - allows you to run UniExtract (and any related binaries) from the command lineCreate a SendTo icon - add a shortcut for Universal Extractor to your SendTo context menuCreate a desktop icon - add a shortcut for Universal Extractor to your desktopCreate a Quick Launch icon - add a shortcut for Universal Extractor to your Quick Launch barIf you wish to automate installation (for custom or unattended installs), please run uniextractXX.exe / to get a detailed description of available command-line options for the installer. All standard Inno Setup command line parameters apply, but also pay special attention to the Components, Tasks, and Custom Parameters detailed at the bottom of the help window.
If the filetype is supported, UniExtract begins by checking for a valid destination directory and recording the directory size. If necessary, a new directory will be created (with a directory size of zero). UniExtract then spawns a shell and calls the supporting binary to begin extracting files from the selected archive to the destination directory. After completion, UniExtract checks the size and timestamp of the subdirectory to determine if extraction was successful; if the size or timestamp is greater than the initial values, UniExtract assumes success and exits. If extraction fails, UniExtract notifies the user and leaves a log file (uniextract.log) that (should) contain any error messages.
The uniextract.log file is created during the extraction process by the tee program. Essentially, all output from the running binary is redirected to tee, which in turn writes the output to the log file as well as echo it to the screen to give the user current progress. Upon successful execution this file is deleted, but if an error is detected it is left alone for the user to review. Note: As of v1.4, the location of uniextract.log can be changed to any user-specified directory.
I'm guessing you downloaded the source code zip file. If you click on the download link and go to the bottom of RC2 area, just above 2.0.0 RC1 you'll see \"Assets\", click on that and then the top download \"UniExtractRC2.zip\".
Thanks I am Baas for a useful reminder. :)Gora explains (@ -1868252.html#post1868252, Google translated...):After a recent algorithm change UE unpack some installers can extract different than the version 1.6.1.58. Before installing the new version be sure to save the old version, and in case of problems with unpacking, unpacking, check the old version and report the results here, attaching a link to the installer problem. In this period, the server check for new versions will be unavailable, and update UE will not be possible.Gora addons page (in Russian): (Info only, downloads are hosted @ forum.oszone.net which requires registration...)
webfork- I understand they are using it for bandwidth concerns. I just hate the fact that my favorite portable extractor requires another download to extract the file type that I want to use it for. Other than that it is the best extractor out there.
For anyone having trouble unpacking with the Inno Setup Unpacker, you need to download the latest file from here: Currently, the latest file is innounp033.rarExtract the file innounp.exe from the above download into Unversal Extractor's bin folder, overwriting the existing one.
The patern recognition is only as good as how up to date the triddefs are, if you find probs with it extracting archives try downloading a more up 2 date version from Marko's webpage ( )This improved things a lot when I updated it...
ok i found somewhere on the internet version 1.5 and i am using it it is very stable and works with everything!!! the program looks the same and it will extract and compress .exe files and many other types. I use this more than jzip, 7zip, win zip, and even windows rar!!! My version is very portable all it is is a .exe file and a .dll file if you leave them together it works!!! well if anyone can find a link please write a comment so that other people can also download i will not give you guys the link ,for 1 i cant even remember the website, and 2 it is to good of a program to upload it and get it jammed in the process...... well that is that!!
create a shortcut to the uniExtract.exe,then:start->run: \"sendto\"place the shortcut there,Now, everytime you want to open something with uniextract, you right click on the file->sendto->uniExtract,and poof, it runs, :P
The false positives from AV programs are a known issue. Please see =62418&st=123 and read through a couple pages of posts for details.mangancha, the file you downloaded is fine. The page on legroom.net is the official \"home\" of UniExtract, but since it's served from a home DSL connection I'm hosting the binaries on a shared webhost environment (c1pher.com) with far more available bandwidth.PJ and anonymous, as you pointed out UniExtract does write a file to C:\\ for debugging, and it does write history information to the registry. When I originally wrote this app I didn't give any thought to the possibility that people would want to run it from a USB drive. However, given that this has become a fairly common use, I'm planning on making the history and debugging features optional in a future version so that it can truly be considered a \"portable\" app.Sproaticus, I don't understand your statement at all. RAR is a very common format, and can be freely extracted with any number of utilities. Simply search for unrar.exe to find an official command line version. How does this possibly translate to sharewareEveryone else, if you have additional comments or questions, please consider sharing them on =62418. I regularly follow this message board and can more quickly respond to any concerns.
the registry values are found at hkey_current_usersoftwareuniextract. it looks as if it's only a \"list\" of the most recent file extracted and the folder it was extracted to.it may store more than just the one that I have, but I don't have time to test it out personally.but this doesn't the portability.
Have not yet been able to get uniextract to unpack NSIS install files. As far as registry entries, as stated on the homepage, if the target file extention is .EXE, PIED is called. PIED creates some more registry entries.
