We had an interesting discussion this morning at the office. Someone mentioned that you can go to a Christmas market and get gluhwein and \"hey they come with free mugs\". And okay, I know they charge a deposit on the mugs, but I assumed there was an expectation you'd bring it back. Kind of like the shopping carts at the grocery. They aren't trying to sell grocery carts for 1 euro.

You are correct in saying you cannot remove a liter glass from the tents, but there is a deposit & you can keep a weiss bier glass from the little biergartens all over the wiesn , I've done it , same concept as the Gluhwein mugs.

In Berlin and Dresden you can take it and lose the deposit, no questions asked. But I agree with the other posters on accumulation and usually make my decision based on some simple criteria: does it have a year on it Is the design pretty nifty, like does it include sites or nice/unique artwork that is attractive Will this mug add to a currently small collection of mugs in your current kitchen cabinet and serve as a regular drinking mug -or- do you collect mugs -or - do you want to keep it as a souvenir since you're visiting from out of town If the answer is yes to ALL of the above, then go ahead and take it, otherwise best to get your deposit back and wait a bit. There's always next year, or next week, or tomorrow...
